Noura Hodhodi
First prize winner in Ages 15-18 division
Winning composition: Fakhteh (Common Cuckoo)
How old were you when you started composing?
15 years old
What do you love most about composing music?
Music is my language, I write my feelings by using notes. I like people to listen to my pieces and search for the story behind the piece and connect with my music. The most important reason that I love composition is creating. Creating my own music that defines me.
Tell us a little about your winning YWCC composition
Fakhteh inspired by sounds of the Common cuckoo bird (Persian: فاخته -- Fakhteh). Overall, in some parts of this piece, there is a reference to Bayat-e Esfahan or Avaz Esfahan. Bayat-e Esfahan (Persian: بیات اصفهان) is one of the melodic pieces of Iranian traditional music.
What was your process/approach to composing your piece for YWCC?
I thought this competition was very great because it was for young women, and then I decided to participate in this competition. I am very happy to be one of the winners of this competition.
What is your advice to someone who is interested in composing a piece but does not know where to start?
I advise him/her to never be afraid of what others think and always listen to a lot of good music. Always learn from the composers of the past.
The important thing is to always write your composition. You can edit it in the future and it may even be your best piece.
Don't be afraid to do something new.
Anytime is great wherever you start.
Just do it and be brave.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
